As recently as 2009, the national park made a habit of saying there were zero moose on the east side of Rocky Mountain National Park. Since then, the moose population has steadily increased. At the end of 2020, I estimate there are about 40 Shiras Moose east of the continental divide. The East Troublesome fire, on the Grand Lake side, raged in prime moose habitat. The impact of the fire on the moose population is unknown.
